The TAMUK rabbit is a relatively new rabbit developed by Texas A&M University of Kingsville (thus the name). Their goal was to develop a rabbit that could better withstand the summer Texas heat.
They are considered a composite breed as they are a cross of seven different breeds: New Zealand Red, Siamese Satin, Californian, New Zealand White, Dutch, Champagne d'Argent, Harlequin, and Havana. Because of this variety of breeds, TAMUKS are of various colors and weigh between 10-12 lbs.
TAMUKs have longer ears and thinner fur coats than other meat rabbits which allows them to tolerate the hot and humid Texas summers much better than the other breeds. They are a hardy and vigorous meat breed with a high production, strong feed conversion, and heat tolerance!
The TAMUK is not really a breed of rabbit but rather a location where the rabbit was derived. The TAMUK is a spin-off of the Altex. The Altex is a breed of domestic rabbit developed in 1994 specifically for the commercial meat industry. The Altex breed is not recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA). Like TAMUK, the name Altex is derived from Al plus Tex, referring to this breed's initial development at Alabama A&M University and at Texas A&M University–Kingsville.
Little Creek Farms breeds TAMUK because they are a variety of colors and make excellent pets in addition to being a quality meat rabbit.
